Suse Linux Personal 9.1
« on: October 19, 2004, 05:44:36 PM »

This isn't a help post. Today I've finally decided to quit sitting on the bench and step up to the plate. Today I ordered my CD of Suse Linux Personal 9.1 for a whopping $2.49 including shipping! Granted you can download it for free, but seeing the download is over 700 megs I think I can spare the cash for the CD. I purchased the cd from here:

http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/cart.php/ba/pdtl/product/274

And frankly I have no idea how reputable this company is. But for the price I'll give 'em a shot. Keep in mind I have very little actual knowledge of Linux. Yes the ZboX server runls on Red Hat Linux, but seeing that the server is fully managed, I don't have to mess with it. I'll chronicle my experiences with it here. This could be very interesting. You can find more info about Suse Linux here:

http://www.suse.com/us/

Stay tuned!

Bert
are you going to partition (sp) your hard drive?

I've been thinking about doing that and then putting in a second OS.

Hi Deamon.
Actually I'm going to dual boot off of two seperate hard drives. One drive for Windows and the other for Suse. The new case I just got has room for six, yes six hard drives. Gonna add a third large hard drive to backup the other two. This is gonna be fun!

Cheesy

P.S.
Supposedly Suse can create your partitions automatically then allow you to dual boot from your partitions. Of course if you go that route, I would recommend backing up your entire drive first. Just in case!

I swear this forum is like a time machine LOL. Since this thread was started nearly three years ago, I have had installed on my hard drives:

Suse
Ubuntu
Puppy Linux
Elive

My current linux of choice is Elive. It's Debian based and uses the wonderful "Enlightenment" window manager. It's a keeper. In addition to the above I also have and use the live cd versions of Knoppix and Slax.

Cheesy

Wow, Linux users!! What's the inventor/writer/whatever's name? Something like "Thorvald??" Anyway he lives here in Portland, OR, and there's qute a healthy contingent of linux users around this area.

Unfortuntely, I'm not one of them. I'm struggling along on zero knowledge of pc's with a little Thinkpad T-43 using Wndows XP-Pro. So far, I lurk in the webtv/pc users help group (ginger's pc ng) and occasionally get up the nerve to ask a stupid newbie ? or 2 or 3.....

My big gripe tonight was trying to bring up "My Pictures" file while reading an e-mail with a photo attachment that I had previously stored in "My Pictures." What is the quick and easy method for doing this??  TIA  E&D

Hi Ellen,
Well you could place a shortcut to your "My Pictures" directory on your desktop:

Right click on Desktop. Click "New". Click "Shortcut". Click "Browse". Click "My Documents". Click "My Pictures". Click "Ok". Click "Next". Name the shortcut what you want, then click finish.

Hope that's what you were wanting.

~;-)

or you can just click onto your Start button while reading the email and in the Right menu column click onto My Pictures which will open your picture album.
